up and running again

Filed under: Various — piibbk @ 1:51 pm

well finally it seems that we can use this blog again. I don’t have time to write much right now, but on the news side of things consider this:

  • Math, Gabi, Brian and Steen will represent Piibbk in the streetbasket tournament tomorrow behind Nørrebro-hallen
  • Summerpractise is mondays at 19.00 at Trongårdsskolen
  • piibbk now has a facebook group.
  • The team came in 8th and will play in the 2nd division once again, now we just need a coach.

piibbk vs Holbæk

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 1:46 pm

Piibbk vs holbaek 81-103

Sunday we had 6 people going all the way to Holbæk to play a tough game. We are facing a rough spot due to injuries, lack of practise and players generally unable to attend practise and games and it showed.

The first 6 minutes we score an amazing amount of points. And when Kin makes his first basket of the game we look at the scoreboard and see… Home 18 Guests 2 hmmm…. At that point it seemed it would be a very long afternoon, but then the French wonder boy took over and scored 19 points in the rest of the first half, many of those coming from the stripe. Our big guys had trouble finding the basket in the first half and Holbæk had no trouble what so ever with finding the bottom of the net. They shot and made a ton of 3-pointers against our porous zone defense which was exemplified by their import player hitting a crazy deep 3 at the buzzer of the second period. All in all we were down 35 to 51 after the first half.

With only 6 players one could argue that it was game over for piibbk, but we kept playing and kind of came away with a decent result after all. We started playing man to man which limited their open shots, and holbaek started substituting, so somehow we hung in there and actually managed to frustrate a team that had the game in the bag.

Jan got a handful of “easy” opportunities and and-ones, Brian hit a three (his only made shot in the game, but not from the lack of lay upsJ ) At one point we were only down by 11 and in general it was an even game if we forget the first 6 minutes, and trust me they are easily forgotten.

Some of the plays worth mentioning are kim’s coast to coast, jan’s and-ones, math’s fast breaks, math’s block, Brian’s three which he thought was a high post shot and jens’ defense.

For holbæk the stand out players were Kasper Pedersen in the first half and their American in the fourth quarter.

Player of the game: Math, due to his own vote (what a humble kid he is), honourable mention is Kim.

Highlight belongs to yours truly for an assist to jan through the legs of a holbaek center J

Scorers for piibbk: Kim 4, Math 27, Steen 11, jens 13, Brian 3, jan 21 and 2 points for coach I guess because I cannot find them.

Topscorers Holbæk: kasper 30, Evan 23, emil 18

piibbk vs sisu 2

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 4:29 pm

 Sisu2 vs. PIBBK

Author: Matthieu Quéva

Game winner:  Sisu 2 won the game 90 to 64

Summary of the game:

Well, with no protocols, this summary will be short! Actually, there is not so much to say about the game, except that we missed some consistency in defense, and that as usual our total of bad passes/turnovers is trying to break some kind of record…

The game itself started with two teams mano a mano in the first 4 minutes (8-8 I think), and since them one of the teams fell…(which one ?). The only thing I can remember now is the 5 fouls of Nic or the wonderful pass of Brian (see highlight)…;). Hum, actually I also remember all my turnovers, but let’s not talk about that…:)

So let’s forget about all of that now, have a good Christmas break, and come back in January for the second half of the season to win against all the teams that are definitely at our reach!

Game MVP: Well I don’t remember, was it me? Okay I’m kidding that was Jens :(

Highlight of the game: After a nice defense sequence, Brian got off his feet to get the ball back into the court. Well, was it lack of luck or just some money under the table? We don’t know but the ball ended up in four only-Sisu’s hands, and under the basket! What an assist!

piibbk vs Virum

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 7:50 pm

PIIBBK vs Virum, November 24th 2007

Author: Jan

We obviously did not show up to meet the best team in our division from Virum with our strongest line-up: the 7-men unit also included Nik-C ,who thus was noted for his 1st game this season. We were so desperate to add some more bodies, that we even tried to lure Niels, who showed up just for his table duty at a ladies game, into playing. I believe coach offered him his own sneakers!!! in order for Niels to play, but it did not happen. Still, we start the game aiming to play another 40 min of gritty zone-defense and opportune offense and somehow manage to hang in there in the 1st  quarter, only falling behind respectable 14 : 23 at the end of 1st Q, upsetting the somewhat ill-tempered Virum coach, almost costing him a T. We even pull a bit closer to them in the 2nd Q, but then the wheels start seriously to fall off the PIIBBK machine: we’re turning it over both bringing it up and on our favourite ‘bit too optimistic’ outlet passes on fastbreaks, we’re not getting out to the guys we know they can stroke it (they get 8 threes for the game), play too much one on five, shoot lousy free throws (that’d be me!), plus Virum eventually figures out ways to score on our indifferent zone which is no wander when a top team plays an undermanned mediocre one. We lose the game 55 : 80, which is by no means good but could’ve been worse, considering everything. So maybe we show up with a couple more pieces to our puzzle in the 2nd half of the season and give them a fight for their money as we used to be able to do the last couple of seasons…

Highlight: Math scoring a tough three, getting fouled in the process and knocking down the free throw.

MVP: Math, for doing a little bit of everything, including getting whacked at the end of the game going for a free lay-up.

Scoring: Math 21, Gabi 13, Jan 11, Brian 6, Kim Emil 4.

last two games

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 8:02 pm

piibbk lose by 1 point in the game against køge in a close game where it showed that we were tired after the game against Solrød the day before and we lose by a lot to virum with only 7 hardworking players (many injuries and no shows)that unfortunately couldn’t keep up with a good shooting and disciplined league leading team from Virum. Recaps will follow.

Solrød vs. PIBBK

Author: Matthieu Quéva

Game winner:  PIBBK won the game 73 to 68

Game MVP: Jens, for his domination under the basket

.Highlight of the game: Matth, for an amazing (J) in-the-air lay up over one of the opponent.

Summary of the game:After a tough defeat over Brønshøj (-30), the team was facing two games in a row. The first of these games was against Solrød, who held a tournament in the beginning of the year. On the contrary to the Brønshøj game, this time our centers were there (well only Søren was missing). However, we were not coming in Solrød as the favorites, and we were aware that we would have to fight against our own deficiencies if we wanted to do a good result there. The game started slow for us. After 2 minutes, we were already trailing by 5 pts (2-7). Solrød was presenting mostly young and athletic players, and our main options were to play on our centers as well as our driving-in game. So after a first quarter to set us up, we were still trailing, but keeping the pace (19-21), with a relatively widespread scoring board (points from Jens, Brian, Gabi and Matth). The second quarter looks a lot like the first one. Solrød’s guys took their chance at the beginning and provoked several interesting fouls that put them on the free-throw line, which helps them to a 9-4 run, and a -7 deficit for us after the 15th minute (23-30). But again, as our usual comeback spirit is not to be proven anymore, we fought back and got rewarded (30-32 after 17th minute and 34-35 at halftime), thanks especially to a very good quarter of Nicolaï (8 pts out of 16). The game stayed tense in the third quarter, where both team were side by side, and finished the quarter on a tie 52-52, with 8 pts from Matth out of 17. So the fate of the game had to be decided in the last quarter. Despite a nice start from Solrod, we were still catching up, especially thanks to two long-distance shots in a row from “never-let-him-shoot” Gabi, tying the game again at 60-60 after 4 minutes. But this was the time we finally took our chance. We delivered a 8-0 thanks to our three centers (Jan, Jens and Brian), and finished the 37th minute at 68-60 for us. This was the fatal blow for Solrød’s team, and despite some nice attempts to come back, we finally ended up winning by 5 pts (73-68), for our 4th victory of the season.

Scoring board:

1.     Matthieu (n°9): 16 pts

2.     Brian (n°10): 13 pts

3.     Nicolaï B. (n°5):  12 pts

4.     Jens (n°11): 11 pts    Gabi (n°12):11pts

 6.     Jan P. (n°13): 7 pts

7.  Kim (n° 6): 3 pts

8.     Bjørn (n°4): 0 pts   Jose (n°4):  0 pts

piibbk vs brønshøj

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 5:31 pm

SAD, SAD SATURDAY

In short we simply got outplayed today. In the first quarter we hung on behind some fastbreaks and the game was tied at 19-19 after 10 minutes. After that I cannot remember any positive things. Brønshøj switches into a 3-2 zone which we cannot solve and they beat us into the ground with their inside size and our lack of size. We are missing three centers and get outrebounded at a rate of approximately 4-1. they win the second quarter by 21 points and it is game over. Brønshøj practically score all their points in the paint or from the stripe and we never find our running game so we end up losing the the game by 30 points :-( that simply isn’t good enough, but…

jan and nik score 10, math 9, Steen 7, Dennis 6

brønshøjs topscorer is their number 7.

mvp: brønshøj’s zone defense

highlight: beats me

piibbk vs bms

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 12:44 pm

Pibbk vs BMS

We didn’t have the best of preparation for this match. No practise during the week and nobody really knew before the game who would show up or whether we would have a coach or not. Anyway, 8 people and a coach (with a whiplash from fishing???) came ready to play, but we must admit that the Extremely loud warm up music caught us off guard and it took us a quarter to be able to hear our own thoughts (guess we are getting old, huh).

In the first quarter bms came out shooting and especially jonas stormly was on fire.

We got caught on the screens and he made 7 points in the quarter and jakob højland did some damage in the paint with 6.

For us it was mainly math’s and jan’s points along with nik’s energy that kept us in first quarter which we lose 19-24

Second quarter belongs to nik. He scores 7, brian adds 4 and math drains a 3-ball. Gabi enters the game shooting and makes the last shot of the half. This quarter bms scores half their points from the line and it seems our defense is picking up a bit. By halftime we are down 41-42

During the break coach explains that it might be to our advantage if we get ahead and try to hold the lead. That might make the young guys nervousJ

Third quarter we do as the doctor ordered. We score the first 8 points behind fastbreaks by math and although bms ties up the game at 51-51 we definitely feel the game is there for the taking

. Math and jan score the majority of the points, but bjørn should also be recognized for his good defense and great energy of the bench. He gets to the stripe a couple of times as well and comes away with 3 points.

Martin brandt stands out this quarter for bms with 6 points. Fourth quarter we just try to protect the lead and bms among other things try a zone and some full court to get back.

We do not always make the right decision, but math and jan keep scoring and bms panic a bit because we succeed in taking away the shots they are used to getting.

In the end we win 85-73 and for the first time in many years we do not have a losing record. Good work guys.

Bonus info: as a team we shoot 25/29 from the stripe. That has to be a record

 Scorers for piibbk: math 26, jan 25 nik 12, brian 8, steen 7, gabi 4, bjørn 3

Scorers for bms: jonas 20, jakob og martin b 13, Thomas 11

Co-mvp’s: math and bjørn

Highlight: steen for his not-in-my-house rejections in the fourth

Piibbk vs Hørsholm 2

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 9:54 am

The result of the game that we lost in Hørsholm has now been changed. Hørsholm didn’t have the license for three of their players and therefore we win 20-0. It is a lousy way to win a match, but since Køge did the same we must admit we need the points so… :-)

PIBBK vs. Amager 2

Author: Nicolai

Game result: PiiBBK 80 – Amager 72

Points: Jan Pawlas 26, Nicolai Bennedsen 18, Mathieu Queva 17, Brian Johansen 8, Steen Madsen 5, Jose Donaire 4, Kim Emil Rasmussen 2

Game MVP: Nicolai, because he made some points for the first time in this season

Highlight of the game: Jose Donaire succeded to make a basket flying with the back to the basket

Summary of the game: Finally first VICTORY of this season in 5 games. In 3 out of the first 4 games we have been very close to a victory, but as usually we have not been good enough in the end. This game will hopefully be the turning point of this season.

Half of the Amager team came late to the game which we took advantage of by bringing us in front with 28-13 after 8 min. It was a very good period for us with a lot of fastbreaks, but also with a bad defends by Amager. We continued the leading of about 12 points to the end of 3.Quarter. In the first 7 minutes of 4 quarter someone seemed to cast a spell over the basket, which resulted in no points in this period and suddenly we were only in front with 4 points. Jan decided to change the man to man defends with a zone. The same zone did not work out in the game (against Broernes BK) the week before, but this time the zone succeded especially because of 3 steels in a row from Brian and Mathieu in 1 minute and the game was over.

piibbk vs Broerne

Filed under: Game summaries — piibbk @ 3:08 pm

Broernes BK vs. PIBBK

Author: Jens

Game result: Broernes BK 103 – PiiBBK 56

Game MVP: Could have been Broernes no. 12, who made a ton of three-pointers, but among the PiiBBles, Jan Pawlas played a little less poor than the rest of the team.

Highlight of the game: Brian with a high-flying offensive rebound tip-in.

Summary of the game:The weather was nice! The result was not! Coming off a bitter defeat to Holbæk, the team claimed to be highly motivated for the task at hand. After a messy, but acceptable first quarter, a horrible second quarter followed, and Broerne went ahead and never looked back. The rest of the game was messy with lots of turnovers from both sides.Unfortunately, the referees of the game were highly objective, resulting in both teams being equally unhappy about some strange calls.Another team injury was added to the list, as Jens broke a finger (out for 3 weeks) during the game. This game is really going to fill up the fines box, unless we retain the limit of +/- 20 points, which was discussed at the team meeting J

Holbæk could have made the scoreboard look alot better were it not for them being 2 for 8 from the freethrowline this quarter. 2nd quarter Holbæk picked up the pace and ran along with us and then straight past us to a halftimescore of 34 to 35, some good inside plays from holbæk ensured the lead. the only positive thing about this quarter was that mr nice guy aka Jens Rype found some aggression burried deep down inside and used it to score 5 points that was nice to see Jens. 3rd quarter PIBBK again ran off with a slight win in an evenly matched quarter where both teams discovered 3pointers, Matthieu kept us at a tie on the scoreboard with a couple of nice 3pointers. and Holbæks number 32 started getting a little too hot on his before the last quarter, having scored 4 at this stage of the game. 4th quarter both teams trails along nicely, until holbæk shoots three 3pointers in a row to a lead of 69-59 pretty much sealing the deal. PIBBK struggel to get back in the game by putting holbæk on the freethrowline fast on each play but it proved to be too late and Holbæk runs out winners at 74-67. looking back on the game considdering what we’ve practiced in the weeks before, our running system didn’t work. it’s as if we have a team of soccer players that all need to hug and pat the guy that gets the rebound before running, a little something we need to practice a little more on.rebounds weren’t all that bad, we got some offensive ones but missed a few defensive.the biggest problem was our shots, we hardly take any, and the precision was really awful. we need to be dangerous from everywhere on the court. Naturally morale is still at a very low, but we’ll get there guys (gays to you Gabi)

fines so far

Filed under: Fine system — piibbk @ 7:49 pm

Besides the 1 kr per point that we lose by fine (we need to save the protocols for the end of the season to figure this out) it seems that 3 people were late for the game this weekend. That is a 50 kr fine and if I remember correctly it was Kim, Math and Jan.

The team

Filed under: the team — piibbk @ 5:34 pm

The team consists mostly of former and current students at DTU. We have a mix of experienced players that are now too old/married/busy, young players committed to their studies and exchange students, so allthough the will is there we probably, as a team, could practise a little more, but what can you do when life gets in the way ;-)

The last couple of years we have not won that many games, but as usual we feel this is the year that will change. hmmm….

We practise Mondays at 21.15 and Thursdays at 18.15.

Player profiles:

Math: Our french guard who is known mostly for his glasslike body, but basketball wise he is fairly quick (at least compared to the rest of the team) and therefore he excels on the fastbreak. Rumor has is that he can actually make a shot once in a while if he is not too tired and it is a fact that he is the only player on the team that cannot beat his own mum in a 1 on 1 contest.

Jan: Our mountain bike riding inside threat. He wreaks havoc in the paint and his bread and butter move is the slooow roll followed by a tough shot with a hand in his face- nothing but net.

Rumor has it that he once was tripleteamed and actually reacted by passing the ball back out to a guard, this, however, cannot be confirmed. It is a fact that he is a great stand still shooter with a vertical of almost 2 inches.

Nik B: quick feet and fast trigger. Weighs about 35 kilos and lets the wind carry him on the fastbreak. Go-to-move is the pull up high post shot. Rumor  has it that he once saw a shot he did not feel like shooting and it is a fact that he is a lean mean fastbreaking machine.

Bjørn: The team’s farmer. he hustles like no other and although you never know if his shots will hit the bottom of the net or the top of the backboard you can always count on him giving 100 %, both on and of the court. His go to move is the cut followed by a scoop lay up.

Jens: The biggest small forward ever seen. He likes to hide behind the backboard and then scoop the ball under/over/in between the defense and then into the basket. Go-to-move is the baseline roll followed by the scoop lay up.He gets tons of steals due to his long arms. Rumor has it that he used to jump like crazy back in the 90’s and it is a fact that he gets rejected more by the backboard than the defense.

Thomas: Known mostly for his  3-point shooting and for his obsession with hair and hair accessories. He likes to shoot!!!

Gabi: the spanish dude best known for defining the rest of the team as homosexuals and for saying that he is used to being paid for playing basketball. athletic swing guy who likes to stroke the three-ball.

Jose: The smaller one of the spanish dudes. Likes to drive into people and then shoot. great touch on the floaters.

Niels: Best known for having twins. Rumor has it that he was once a decent player, but nowadays his go-to-move is the speed diaper change.

Nik C: Used to be an excellent handball player. Role player in the best sense of the word. Knows how he helps the team the most. Rumor has it that he used to be able to see his own feet -) fact is that when he participates things look good for the Kalundborg Mafia.

Brian: High flying football player known for never calling a foul nor making a lefthanded lay up. Jumps and rebounds like crazy. Rumor has it he once remembered to roll after setting a screen then became so happy he forgot to catch the pass.

Dennis: known for being a nice guy from Jutland. We have a feeling he might be a good player, but it is hard to say because we do not see him much. Rumor has it he likes to shoot the baseline jumper.

Søren: the first true center in the history of PIIBBK. Now we just need to learn how to use him. and he needs to learn how to catch a ball without having to go to the ER.

Kim: Once in a while he plays defense without fouling the opposition. Has a DEADLY two-handed shot which works in more than one way. firstly if he has the time, then he makes the shot and secondly the oppostion gets frustrated because they see it as being a lucky shot. Damn that is a lot of luck if you look at his 75 year long career in PIIBBK.

Steen: The fat guy. Talks a lot.

Coach jann: mostly known for talking about people getting laid, swingers etc. Is desperately working to get the team in shape, but it is an up-hill battle
